Information Sailing lessons for adults
The Vereniging Watersport De Twee Provinciën (VWDTP, or: Sailingclub The Two Provinces) was founded in 1911 to promote water sport activities on the Paterswoldsemeer, just south of Groningen. Anyone wishing to utilise the resources in order to improve existing, or learn new skills is welcome to become a member of the club. Over 800 existing members take part in recreational activities and some develop their skills enough to compete in top water sports at a national and international levels. Adults and children of every age benefit from the open, informal atmosphere and (learn to) sail or windsurf in the beautiful surroundings of the Paterswoldsemeer. These are the main features of the club:
The club organises a range of competitions in a variety of classes in which local and national sailors compete. Annual events include not only the Sunday Morning Races, the Rabenhauptraces and the Combi-Noord, but also the regular variety of class events.
Adults sailing classes
Have you always wanted to sail and never had the chance? Did you sail as a child and want to pick up where you left off? Now you can! Every year around 75 adults sign up for 11 evening classes where they can learn the basic skills of dinghy sailing. Many of them return the following year to develop their skills further. You will meet many new people.
Classes for children from 8 to 18 years
Approximately 250 children from the age group 8 to 18 make use of the facilities at the sailing club each year and for many of them sailing becomes the perfect hobby. Children in this age group can also take part in the week long ‘Introductory sailing course’ which is given during the summer holidays. For children who want to sail as a sport, experienced instructors are on hand to give weekly trainingsessions for those wishing to compete at a regional and national level.
Workshops: Manouvering a sailing boat with a motor/engine
This workshop is given specially for those wishing to learn the art of manouvering longer, sometimes unmanagable vessel. Every aspect is covered in these practical workshops, for example; turning in a narrow space, navigation techniques etc.
Sailing activities on the IJsselmeer, the Wadden or in a flotilla in Croatia
Being a member of the sailing club does not mean that you are restricted to the Paterswoldsemeer. That is why the sailing club organises annual courses on larger waters, such as the IJsselmeer, de Wadden and in Croatia. It is also possible to learn sailing on a keel yacht during which participants can study for the one of the Commissie Water Opleidingen (CWO) exams.
Opening times of the sailor’s bar and terrace
During the sailing season – April to November-, the sailor’s bar is open at weekends from 11:00 to 18:00 hrs. Everyone, including non-members, is welcome to enjoy the facilities. Follow the races, watch the training, or just enjoy a perfect spot to retire to after a hard days work and watch the sun go down with a refreshing drink….
Alongside the sporting activities lots of energy is put into organising extra activities during the year, including the winter season. For example, lectures, theoretical workshops, dinners, presentations from famous round-the-world sailors like Olav Cox (2006) and of course the now famous annual music festival shared by the other cafés and restaurants around the lake – ‘Jazz on the Lake’.
Something for everyone!
As you can see there is something for every one, including beginners, experienced and reacreational enthousiats and all this for a reasonable fee.
